Whether you’re vaping to quit cigarettes, or want to make an informed decision against the flavor ban, you probably want to be more aware of the other ingredients in your e-juice. If your e-juice came without nicotine, what would be in it? What vape juice ingredients should be avoided? Let’s dissect some common e-juice ingredients one by one and determine what you should accept and what you should avoid.

Propylene Glycol & Vegetable Glycerin -- Accept -- OK!

Two of the key essential ingredients in e-juice is Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). PG and VG are the ingredients that carry flavor and produce vapor, respectively. The FDA classifies these ingredients as safe, both in foods and in cosmetics. Although inhaling anything directly in your lungs can never be classified as completely safe, inhaling VG and PG is one of the safest ingredients to vape.

Nicotine -- Accept or Avoid? A Deeper Analysis Is Required …

Whether you should accept or avoid nicotine is highly dependent on the individual. Nicotine is a stimulant, which means it can sharpen focus and help you relax. It is known to alter brain chemistry in developing minds, and it is considered a highly addictive substance.

Since nicotine acts on the central nervous system, it is known to contribute to cardiovascular damage. But, if you’re an ex-smoker trying to quit cigarettes, you might want to use nicotine to help you stop smoking cigarettes. Vapers who have never smoked should not accept nicotine, but ex-smokers can accept it as it is a powerful tool in e-juice to help quit a devastating habit. Nicotine levels can be gradually lowered in e-juice over a period of time to remove nicotine dependency completely. For example, if you start at 21mg of nicotine, you can expect to be completely weaned off nicotine in 10 weeks.

Caffeine -- Avoid!

Now I know most of you like coffee e-liquids. I’ve seen your coffee e-liquid reviews and I get questions on the daily on which coffee e-liquid is the best. But there is one important thing you need to know about this flavor — be cautious if caffeine is listed as an ingredient.

Although you could technically vape a little caffeine without issues, it may be worth avoiding altogether. The reason for this is because directly inhaling caffeine allows the substance to go directly into the bloodstream (bypassing the gastrointestinal tract), meaning you’ll feel the effects more immediately at the cost of not being able to measure how much you are consuming. Inhaling too much caffeine at once can have intense effects on the central nervous system, including rapid heartbeat, vomiting, shaking, altered consciousness, and even seizures.

Cinnamon -- Avoid!

Cinnamon is delicious as an additive in spicing up breakfast, dinner, dessert, and even tea but don’t add it to your e-juice!

Cinnamaldehyde, the organic compound responsible for the cinnamon flavor, is actually a toxin to our immune cells. It’s true that cinnamon as a spice can lower blood sugar levels, reduce heart disease, and reduce inflammation. However, in a study conducted by the University of Rochester Medical Center, it was found that vaping the compound caused tissue damage and inflammation on monocytes (a type of white blood cell).

In other words, if you don’t want to be getting sick all the time, avoid cinnamon flavoring or cinnamaldehyde in your e-juice.

Diacetyl -- Avoid!

Diacetyl is considered a harmful ingredient in e-juice. Diacetyl, an organic compound that appears yellowish-green in a liquid state, leaves a buttery taste. It is used in a variety of products, from margarin to alcoholic drinks. In beverages and food, ingesting Diacetyl is harmless. It’s when you inhale Diacetyl that it becomes a problem.

If you are what you eat, then you might be what you inhale as well. Factory workers were exposed to airborne Diacetyl while creating the buttery flavor in microwavable popcorn. Over the course of their tenure, the workers reported coughing, wheezing, and general malaise that steadily worsened. After several tests, doctors concluded that the workers had bronchiolitis obliterans or “Popcorn Lung”. Popcorn lung is an irreversible lung disease that inflames and obstructs the smallest airways of the lungs. The only viable treatment for popcorn lung is a lung transplant.

Eat popcorn, don’t inhale it. Avoid Diacetyl as an ingredient in your e-juice. Keep it to food and beverages when possible.

Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin -- Avoid!

Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin are very close to Diacetyl molecularly. It shares many properties with Diacetyl, and is a common additive in artificial butter flavoring as well. Although these two ingredients have been under less heat (figuratively speaking) than Diacetyl, their similarities are still a huge concern amongst health professionals. And if you are an ex-smoker, it’s important to note that these two compounds can be found in cigarettes as well.

Chili Powder -- Avoid!

You probably won’t see this ingredient on the shelves, and with good reason. Since chili is a flavor that is difficult to safely consolidate into vape juice, this juice is usually created by hobbyists. This is exactly the reason why we are listing it here. If you are ever offered a chili vape, or a vape branded as “chili flavor”, find out what the chili flavor is. If they used chili powder to make the juice, avoid it.

Like Diacetyl, chili powder is not meant to be inhaled. It is meant to be a cooking ingredient and has no function in e-juice whatsoever. When inhaled, chili powder is a neurotoxin that causes immediate side effects such as coughing, choking, and spluttering. Inhaling large amounts can even bring on seizures, heart attacks, or death.

Avoid Low Quality E-Liquid Brands

If you want to be 100% confident in nicotine or nicotine free e-liquid, you need to buy from reputable premium e-liquid manufacturers. Most low quality e-liquid brands focus on keeping production costs as low as possible. Less research and development goes into their products, which results in a product that probably contains an ingredient above.
